The Basics
Based in Hanover County near Richmond, Virginia, Hanover County Community Services Board is the behavioral health wing of Hanover County’s local government. The facility offers substance abuse treatment and mental health care on an outpatient basis. There are currently two locations, Ashland and Mechanicsville, both offering the same range of services.
Treatment and Staff
Clients in the substance abuse program are typically an equal mix of self-referred and court-mandated clients. All participants begin with an initial evaluation to help develop a proper program of care. There is no detox available at the facility so those in need should complete this leg of treatment prior to admission at Hanover County.
IOP is comprised of two group therapy sessions a week, led by LADCs. The groups follow a range of treatment methodologies though they rely primarily on CBT and DBT. These groups meet from 5:30 to 8:30 pm for a total of 36 sessions. Individual therapy is not a part of the weekly schedule but clients can make appointments as needed. While all are encouraged to participate in local 12-step meetings, they are not a required.
Given that Hanover County also offers mental health treatment, dual diagnosis support is available. During initial evaluations, clients can set up a two-track program and attend both substance abuse and mental health groups. This also allows them to work with an on-staff psychiatrist to help with medication management. All clients participate in a monthly psychoeducational group and there is also a readiness group that meets once a week on Friday from 1 to 3 pm.
Once clients finish IOP they traditionally step down to a standard outpatient program that features fewer weekly sessions. When this phase concludes, there is an aftercare program in the form of a once a week group session. This is available indefinitely and at no extra cost.
Extras
Hanover Country also offers a family program in the form of a once a month group sessions which family members can attend. And in addition to outpatient programs for substance abuse and mental health, they also provide a number of additional behavioral health services; including case management and an emergency hotline for those experiencing a crisis. They also offer educational classes, such as parenting.
In Summary
Clients of Hanover County Community Service Board can expect basic IOP or standard outpatient care that includes CBT-informed therapy and dual-diagnosis support. While therapy is primarily group-based, clients do have access to individual sessions if needed. They can also take advantage of the family program, aftercare and a host of other services. For those in the area, Hanover County Community Service Board is worth considering.
