The Basics
Established in 1969, Keystone Substance Abuse Services is a CARF-accredited non-profit organization in Rock Hill, South Carolina offering detox, short-term residential and outpatient treatment services including a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). KSAS’s inpatient care is available for adult men and women while its individualized outpatient programs are open to adolescents and adults. Treatment in all programs relies on evidence-based therapy methods and 12-step recovery concepts.
Accommodations and Food
Both detox and residential treatment take place in the same treatment facility—a hospital like setting in a one-story, red brick building. Detox typically lasts seven days, during which time residents remain in semi-private rooms with shared bathrooms. Those who remain in treatment at Keystone following detox move into a different wing of the building into rooms shared with one other client. There are shared bathrooms within these units with showers.
Though there is no exercise program during this stage of treatment, there is some work-out equipment at the facility that residents have access to as well as a walking path on campus. While residents are in detox there are no phone calls allowed though family members may visit during the appointed facility hours. Clients may use the facilities’ phones when necessary but no personal devices are allowed until treatment is completed.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are brought in daily from the local hospital working with KSAS. Though allergies and food restrictions are taken into account, there are set menus offered to the clients.
Treatment and Staff
Those in detox can expect to spend two to seven days with staff monitoring their condition around the clock. During this period, clients begin a program of group and individual therapy which introduces them to the 12 steps. After detox generally comes the residential portion of the program, which can last up to 60 days. Days are filled with classes, group sessions and psycho-education sessions.
Following residential care, clients often step down into outpatient care, generally either the IOP or gender-specific PHP. The PHP for women only runs Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 2:30 pm and also includes a children’s therapy program for those who bring their kids during the summer months. IOP is offered in several varieties, with men and women’s programs as well as a co-ed track. All three consist mainly of groups and take place Monday through Thursday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm for women and 8:30 to 11:30 am for men. The co-ed group meets Monday through Wednesday from 6 to 9 pm. There’s also an IOP available for clients with co-occurring disorders that meets nine hours a week, Monday through Wednesday in the afternoons. All of these tracks typically last between 12 and 20 weeks with an aftercare program factored in.
The facility uses 12-step philosophy, CBT, EMDR and Motivational Interviewing (MI) as primary treatment methods. The programs at Keystone also emphasize relapse prevention, anger management, parenting and coping skills. Keystone also has an impressive staff which includes Master’s-level addiction counselors, LPCs, LCSWs, medical doctors, LPNs and peer counselors.
Extras
Residential treatment includes a weekly family program where loved ones can attend group sessions with the clients. There’s also an aftercare program for those who complete IOP consisting of one hour-long group session per week. Alumni programs are offered for those who have completed treatment at Keystone and have remained clean and sober for 90 days. This service is offered as an additional support system for current clients. There is also a DUI education program available.
In Summary
Overall, Keystone Substance Abuse Services provides individuals and their families help with every step of recovery through a variety of different programs from detox through aftercare. Treatment is evidence-based and fairly comprehensive, with support from a credentialed staff to help along the way. In all, Keystone Substance Abuse Services is a strong resource to those in South Carolina.
