Fair Oaks CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 1989 in Fair Oaks, California, a high-end suburb 20 miles east of San Francisco, Clean and Sober Transitional Living is the oldest sober living community in Northern California. CSTL accommodates 110 clients network that is comprised of 17 homes. Their mission is to help strengthen a client’s commitment to relapse prevention, as well as provide tools for them to live new lives. CSTL works on a phase system, and accommodates clients according to length of sobriety and other factors.

Accommodations and Amenities

There are six houses in phase one, which resembles dorm-style living. Houses are gender-specific, but men and women attend many functions together. The main house accommodates 12 men, and includes the main office, dining area, 12-step meeting area and a recreation room. Women are allowed inside the common areas. Clients are paired in comfortably furnished rooms, which include twin beds with headboards, drawers, a desk, lamps and area rugs. The rooms have a definite lived-in feel, as if residents have made themselves at home. During phase one, clients are paired, with the idea that isolation is unhealthy for a newly sober alcoholic.

Three meals are served per day. Residents eat together, communal style inside the dining area at the main house. Breakfast options include eggs, hash browns, bacon, sausage, fruit, waffles, pancakes and cereal. For lunch, clients make their own sandwiches from bread or bagels. Sandwich fillings include cold cuts, leftovers, cheese, tuna fish, peanut butter and jelly. Dinner is a homemade affair. Entrees are recommended by residents, and include chicken, roasts, turkey and a Saturday barbeque steak night.

Phase one amenities include free laundry facilities, detergent, paper supplies, normal toiletries, feminine products, cable TV, Wi-Fi, recreational facilities, a library and designated smoking areas. House managers live on the premises. Phase one all-inclusive 30-day cost is $895.

Phase two accommodations are more flexible. Between four and six clients are lodged in single-family furnished homes in close proximity to CSTL’s main location. Residents have their own rooms. Clients purchase their own groceries and prepare their own meals, or cook with their housemates, in fully equipped kitchens. Amenities include cable TV, all utilities, landscaped yards and barbeque grills. The houses are close to public transportation. While house managers and staff provide supervision and guidance, peer support is heavily stressed here.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients have undergone primary care at a drug rehab or have been clean and sober for a minimum of three days. Prior to admission, they must pass an alcohol and drug screening.

Phase one requirements include attendance at four weekly 12-step meetings, participation at the Sunday house meeting and performance of household chores. The community offers 17 weekly AA/NA meetings on the premises. Clients are encouraged to attend school, find a job or perform community service, with the premise that they must get out of their comfort zones, and be productive which is conducive to healthy recovery. Some residents work in the kitchen, which occasionally offers employment opportunities. Residents requiring outpatient treatment are provided with local referrals including New Dawn Treatment Centers in Sacramento.

The curfew is midnight Sundays through Thursdays, and one am on Fridays and Saturdays. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. Clients that test positive must leave the premises until the Wednesday following their relapse. Prior to readmission, they must pass a drug and alcohol screening. Additionally, other residents provide input about their re-entry. Upon return, they undergo a blackout period, prohibiting them to work or attend school. During that phase, they must attend 90 meetings in 90 days, acquire a sponsor within a week and have attendance cards signed by the meeting’s secretary.

Residents in good standing are eligible to move onto phase two housing after 30 days. Phase two clients live a more independent lifestyle, while continuing participation at 12-step meetings and working, attending school or performing community service. Requirements include being at house meetings.

Extras

CSTL offers residents many recreational opportunities, including a Saturday night double feature movie night at the main house.

In Summary

This sober living network is a great deal for men and women who want long-term transitional living. Many clients have stayed on at CSTL for years, because they enjoy the environment and the sense of community that comes when they get to live among peers. CSTL offers affordable sober living for clients who are both fairly new to recovery or those with a little time under their belt.
