Atlanta GeorgiaThe Basics

The Imara Center is a behavioral health agency founded in 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia. Services offered apply a trauma-informed approach when treating adults and adolescents struggling with mental health and substance abuse disorders. The Imara Center provides individual therapy on an outpatient basis, along with in-home and in-school services for adolescents. There are currently no group therapy sessions offered. Family participation is considered a significant part of treatment and is implemented whenever possible.

Treatment and Staff

Before therapy can begin, clients must first complete a behavioral health assessment to help staff develop treatment plans. Medication management services are available on-site for adolescents only though adults dealing with dual diagnosis issues are offered integrated treatment plans with a local psychotherapist.

Individual therapy sessions are typically an hour long. Because each client’s treatment plan varies, the frequency of sessions depends on individual needs. Length of treatment must also be assessed individually. During sessions, a licensed therapist discusses a variety of social, emotional, anger, coping and co-dependency issues while also providing substance abuse awareness and education on the disease of addiction. Tools for relapse prevention are also discussed.  All clients are encouraged to invite their family members to participate in recovery as well, with family therapy sessions arranged through primary counselors on an as-needed basis.

Staff members include LCSWs, LPCs and child psychiatrists. Treatment modalities primarily include CBT and DBT.

Extras

In-school and at-home services for youth clients dealing with mental health issues are available. The In-School Services (ISS) program provides intervention and prevention awareness in an educational environment. The Imara Center members work to reduce classroom disruption, drop out rates and suspension while promoting emotional well-being. Parents and families have access to psychoeducational services arranged collectively by the school and Imara staff members. Life skills training, school enrichment training and health and wellness training are also provided through ISS.

The Imara Center also has a partnership with the Division of Family and Children Services to help families find support and recourses to maintain at-risk children in their home. Service options include parent training and family counseling.

In Summary

At The Imara Center, clients can benefit from private outpatient sessions personalized to their specific needs. Though youth services are more extensive, adults are offered adequate support through evidence-based modalities. For those in the Atlanta area, The Imara Center is worth considering for a variety of needs.
