The Basics
Champlain Valley Family Center is a non-profit licensed through the state of New York to provide outpatient substance abuse services. Treatment for adults includes group and individual therapy while adolescents are offered individual sessions scheduled as needed. The organization also offers youth prevention and education programs in school and community-based settings.
Treatment and Staff
Upon beginning treatment, clients must complete an initial assessment so they can be placed in the proper level of care. Those in need of acute services are provided referrals to inpatient and detox facilities where their needs can be better addressed. Aside from group therapy, adults are provided individual sessions every two weeks. For those in need of dual diagnosis support, medication management services are available on-site by a visiting psychiatrist.
Outpatient groups for adults are offered Monday through Friday at various hours throughout the day. The earliest of these is held at 9:30 am while the latest takes place at 6:15 pm. Clients can attend anywhere from two to five groups a week depending on their availability and need. All groups are co-ed except for two gender-specific groups focused specifically on male and female recovery, respectively. During group therapy sessions, counselors address issues such as the negative affects of substance abuse, living sober, relapse prevention and the disease of addiction. The team at CVFC includes a psychiatrist, CADCs, LADCs and mental health counselors trained in evidence-based modalities like CBT and DBT.
Extras
In addition to its outpatient programs, CVFC also offers a range of specific programs aimed at younger clientele. Prevention services include school-based counseling and education for individuals in grades K through 12. These programs apply techniques based on science-based models like Project Toward No Drug Use and Project Alert. There’s also community-based intervention which CVFC supports through providing training for community groups and a tobacco prevention movement led by youth members ages 13 through 18.
A Step Ahead Program is an after-school offering that matches community volunteers with students attending school in Clinton County. Students meet with their mentors once a week, where they engage in fun activities like painting, scrapbooking and reading. There’s also the Intensive Family Support Program which provides assistance to families with at-risk youth. Services including case management and counseling.
Learn and Serve America is a program where students build bonds and relationships through service projects like reading buddies, environmental awareness fairs, visiting seniors at local nursing homes and senior centers and writing letters to soldiers.
There are three Safe Schools/Health Student programs provided to families interested in school violence prevention, drug use prevention, emotional or mental health support and early childhood development services. The three programs include Families and Schools Together (FAST), Too Good for Drugs (TGFD) and Keep a Clear Mind (KACM).
Finally, the Colleges for Change Program advocates against how tobacco is viewed on college campuses. CVFC supports these student movements by offering the Advocacy in Action grant.
In Summary
Chaplain Valley Family Center provides basic outpatient substance abuse care for both adolescents and adults, with some support for gender-specific treatment as well. Services are flexible, affordable and catered to each client’s specific needs. While Chaplain Valley Family Center might not be ideal for those seeking intensive support for co-occurring disorders, it remains a worthy and affordable option for those in the area, with a wide range of supplementary services.
