Harris House

The Basics

Harris House is a drug treatment facility that offers inpatient treatment, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and transitional housing in and around St. Louis, Missouri. Founded in 1961, its programs provide holistic and individualized treatment for men and women struggling with addiction and sobriety. The transitional housing is intended for individuals who have already completed the long-term residential program at Harris House but still need more structure than independent sober living.

Accommodations and Amenities

Harris House provides subsidized gender-specific housing for up to one year. There are 43 beds in the men’s home and 23 beds in the women’s home, with two residents per room.

Each home is equipped with a large fully stocked kitchen and clients are expected to provide their own food and prepare their own meals. The spacious living room has cable TV and wireless Internet is available throughout the home. There are also spacious front and backyards for gatherings and socializing.

Rules and Regulations

Although not as strict as some transitional environments, Harris House does have a few requirements for living in one of their homes, including  employment or school attendance. Clients must also be working with a sponsor in a 12-step program and attending Big Book study sessions. They must meet with a counselor through Harris House once a month. In the spirit of service, clients are also required to lead recovery discussion groups for new residents enrolled in the long-term residential program at Harris House.

Extras

As part of Harris House’s emphasis on mastering independent living skills and employment, counselors assist clients in finding employment opportunities and acquiring the skills necessary to live outside of a treatment program.

Harris House provides a comfortable sober living environment for men and women who have completed inpatient treatment. The structured living program requires clients to attend 12-step meetings and monthly sessions with a counselor while also expecting them to develop independence and life skills. Overall, clients making a commitment to Harris House transitional living are investing in their long-term sobriety.
