The Basics
The Richard L. Roudebush VAMC is a mental health facility dedicated to serving the veteran community in Indianapolis, Indiana. Among its many services for veterans, the Roudebush facility offers substance abuse treatment on an outpatient level. Located a few miles north of downtown Indianapolis, the Roudebush facility itself was opened in 1932 providing veterans with medical, surgical, psychiatric, neurological and rehabilitative care. The mental health sector also provides assistance for PTSD, psychological assessments, sexual trauma and general psychiatry.
Treatment and Staff
The Roudebush substance abuse program is designed for veterans who are experiencing significant distress due to alcohol and substance abuse. Since the program is outpatient based, only individuals requiring less intense treatment are accepted.
All clients are first assessed with a bio-psycho-social screening to determine whether medication or additional services are required. Roudebush does offer detox services using Suboxone as well as smoking cessation medication. Medication management is available with Psychiatric care and a knowledgeable staff of on-site nurses.
Substance abuse services incorporate evidence based methods in both group and individual therapy through an individualized treatment approach. Clients may attend sessions as little as one day per week up to three days per week depending on their treatment plan. Groups include psycho-education classes, relapse prevention techniques and specialty classes for PTSD and trauma. The facility also offers services for clients requiring dual diagnosis support.
All groups and individual sessions are facilitated by a team of CADCs, LCSWs and LPCs. Psychiatrists are also on staff for medication management and additional assessments. Referrals for 12-step meetings are available through the clinical staff.
Extras
Roudebush also offers a range of specialty programs including a designated PTSD program that combines family and exposure therapy. A sexual trauma program is also available for men and women who have experienced trauma during their active duty.
In Summary
The Richard L. Roudebush VAMC offers a thorough range of mental health services for both active and inactive veterans requiring support. Funding for the program is dependent on service status and discharge details. Overall, the substance abuse program provides veterans with a solution-oriented treatment plan using evidence based methods that enables clients to move forward in recovery. Individual, group and family therapy is available as well as many community resources for supporting the recovery process.
