Since 1972, The Egyptian Public and Mental Health Department has offered a variety of outpatient behavioral health and human services for adults and adolescents with a network of facilities across the state of Illinois. Currently, EPMHD has offices in Eldorado, Carmi, Ridgeway and Shawneetown, with all except the Ridgeway location offering substance abuse treatment and dual diagnosis support for adolescents. Adult treatment services include group and individual therapy sessions using CBT and DBT, though adolescents are not offered group therapy sessions.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at EPMHD begins with an intake process and a clinical assessment to determine an appropriate level of care. Following intake, an individualized treatment plan is developed which decides the frequency of group and individual sessions. There are no medication management services available on-site, but referrals are provided upon request.

Adults in need of mental health and substance abuse services are required to attend a minimum of one group session each week. Group therapy is scheduled Monday through Friday at various times throughout the day. Each two-hour session is led by an LADC, CADC or LPC covering topics such as living in balance, anger management, trauma, parenting and coping skills. Some counselors also introduce 12-step principles during sessions, though this is not central to programming. Aside from groups, clients can also schedule hour-long individual sessions on an as-needed basis.

Adolescents seeking treatment have access to a Mental Illness and Substance Abuse (MISA) specialist who treats dual diagnosis issues in an individual setting. Therapists address issues such as self-esteem, emotional and physical health, substance abuse education, goals, relapse prevention and healthy recovery environments. Family members are encouraged to participate in the recovery process by attending therapy as well. Sessions are typically an hour long and can be held at home, in school or in an office setting. Those requiring only mental health support can attend sessions focused on their specific needs as well.

Participation in a 12-step program is not mandatory for clients receiving treatment at EPMHD, though AA/NA meetings are encouraged. While there are no on-site meetings available, information and referrals to local support groups in the community are provided upon request.

Staff members at EPMHD consists of LADCs, LPCs, CADCs, MISA counselors and counselors with at least a Bachelor’s degree in social work. Treatment techniques include evidence-based modalities like CBT and DBT.

Extras

EPMHC also has family based services which include Family Resource Developers (FRD) hosted at local schools which provide education and support to struggling parents. There’s also the Comprehensive Community-Based Youth Services Program which holds group activities aimed at promoting healthy communication in families. The program works with youth between the ages of 11 and 17. A crisis intervention phone line is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for any mental health or substance abuse related emergencies. HIV/ AIDS prevention education and tobacco programs are also available.

Individuals between the ages of 14 and 21 who have been receiving mental health counseling have access to a Transition to Independence Program (TIP). This is an intensive track which offers individual therapy using the TIP model to assist clients in finding educational and vocational opportunities. There’s also the Circle of Youth program, which is a 24/7 supervised group home for wards of the state who are pregnant or who have children. Residents must be between the ages of 13 and 20 and parenting and life skills training are included.

A community support program for adults in need of mental health care is also available. This track includes educational classes aimed at reducing the possibility of psychiatric hospitalization. Other services include the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) program, which assists adults in obtaining employment. Mental health and sustaining care options are available as well to teach clients how to use social service programs. EPMHD has a range of nursing care options as well, supported by a team of RNs, LPNs and LSWs who can provide at-home visits for clients dealing with a variety of illnesses.

Other assorted services include the Women, Infants, Children (WIC) program, which provides diet assessments, nutrition counseling and coupons for infant formulas to qualified clients. Pregnant women or mothers of young infants have access to family case management with can include counseling, transportation and education, though case management is available to those of all ages.

Finally, STD/HIV and TB tests and immunizations are available through EPMHD, as well as prevention education classes related to HIV. There’s also a program for family planning focused on preventing unwanted pregnancies through education and therapy.
