goochland virginiaThe Basics

Goochland Powhatan Community Services is a small agency that provides outpatient treatment  to those dealing with mental health and substance abuse disorders. Currently, GPCS operates two facilities in the Richmond suburbs of Goochland and Powhatan, Virginia. The organization primarily focuses on offering individual therapy sessions, though there is also a specialized relapse prevention therapy group led each week at the Goochland office. Treatment modalities include CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), with psychiatric medication management available as well.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, each client must undergo an assessment to determine whether treatment at GPCS would be a good fit. Those in need of residential care or Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) can be referred to nearby facilities. Medication management services for those with co-occurring disorders is provided on-site. It is suggested that clients submit to random urinalysis throughout treatment, though this is not mandatory.

Treatment is non-intensive and consists of individual therapy scheduled on an as-needed basis. Those participating in private sessions have access to one group therapy session per week as well. Group therapy takes place every Tuesday from 1 to 2:30 pm, during which a CADC discusses relapse prevention techniques with clients.

Participation in additional recovery groups like AA/NA is not mandatory, though it is highly encouraged. Staff members provide directories to support groups in the community upon request. Staff members at GPCS include CADCs, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners and student therapists on their way to becoming licensed.

Extras

Mental health support is also available to individuals, families and couples through scheduled therapy sessions. These can be held in clients’ own homes or at the office. Immediate emergency services are offered over the phone 24 hours a day for those experiencing psychiatric crises as well.

The Parent-Infant Education Program at GPCS provides education and therapy to toddlers with developmental disabilities. Treatment begins with a free screening provided to children up to 36 months old. After this initial phase, a treatment plan is developed which also includes parenting classes.

GPCS also offers Virginia House, a psychiatric rehab program that takes place five days a week from 9 am to 3 pm. During treatment clients engage in therapy and receive medication management. The facility is highly supervised, with residents offered accommodations in a comfortable, home-like environment.

In Summary

The substance abuse treatment offered at Goochland Powhatan Community Services is individualized and evidence-based and would be a good choice for clients transitioning out of impatient care. This can also serve as a starting point for those questioning their substance use. Overall, GPCS offers quality treatment led by certified professionals.
