The Basics
At Alternatives Center for Behavioral Health (ACBH), adolescents and adults living in El Paso, Texas are offered structured outpatient services. Services include a wide variety of program tracks that serve individuals struggling with chemical dependency, anger management, domestic violence, mental health and parenting issues. Psychiatric medication management is also available to those in need.
Treatment and Staff
Upon beginning treatment at ACBH, each client meets with an intake coordinator, after which an individualized treatment plan is created. Those in need of dual diagnosis support are offered on-site psychiatric medication management on a weekly basis. Twelve-step participation is not a part of the treatment curriculum at ACBH.
For those seeking highly structured treatment, ACBH offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The PHP is for clients with co-occurring disorders, with treatment that consists of small group sessions held Monday through Friday from 10 am to 3 pm. Clients are required to complete at least two weeks of treatment. There is also a women’s only group for PHP clients which meets at the same time. Groups are either discussion-based or educational, covering topics such as healthy communication, coping skills, grief, stress management and the addiction as disease model. A licensed female therapist is also available to cover gender-specific topics such as sexual abuse, trauma, eating disorders and self-esteem.
The IOP is for adults struggling with chemical dependencies. Clients are required to complete at least 20 days in treatment. Those in this track have the option to attend group sessions in the morning from 10 am to noon or in the evenings from 6 to 8 pm, Monday through Friday. During sessions, clients learn to identify their relapse triggers and are taught to develop prevention plans.
Adolescents ages 13 to 18 are also offered PHP and IOP tracks. Both are co-ed options and require attendance of group therapy five days a week. The adolescent PHP meets Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 pm, during which teens are taught how to cope with depression, peer pressure, substance abuse and trauma. The adolescent IOP meets from 4 to 6 pm and focuses on relapse prevention from substance abuse.
Adolescent PHP and IOP follow the same regulations as the adult programs. Individual therapy sessions for adults and adolescents in both programs are offered once a week for an hour per session. Family members are welcome to take part in individual sessions upon request when necessary.
Other adult services include programs aimed to treat those dealing with domestic violence, anger management and parenting issues. These services are available in both English and Spanish and meet the requirements for court-ordered clientele. The parenting class meets on Saturday from 9 to 11 am while the anger management group meets from noon to 2 pm on Saturday. Those interested in the domestic violence program are offered co-ed and gender-specific groups. The women’s group meets on Wednesday from 5:30 to 7 pm and the men’s group meet on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7:30 pm and on Saturday from 8 to 10 am and 10 to noon. There are co-ed Spanish groups available on Monday from 6 to 7:30 pm. Finally, there are two hour sessions available on Saturday at 8 and 10 am.
The staff is comprised of LADCs who use evidence-based treatment methods including CBT and DBT in group and individual therapy sessions. There are also on-staff psychiatrists available.
Extras
Aftercare services are available at no extra charge to adults and adolescents who complete PHP or IOP. Services include an hour-long support group meeting held once a week for a year.
In Summary
Overall, the Alternatives Center for Behavioral Health provides a range of structured outpatient options for clients. Both adults and adolescents have flexible programs available. At ACBH, groups are kept small and focus on the necessary tools to cope with mental health and substance abuse issues.
