The Basics
Located in Topeka, Kansas, Four Winds Family Recovery Center offers outpatient support to families, adolescents and adults in need of behavioral health treatment. Programs at Four Winds address issues such as parenting, chemical dependency and gambling through the use of evidence-based therapies and educational lectures. Substance abuse treatment also stresses participation in a 12-step program, random urinalysis tests and aftercare.
Treatment and Staff
Programs at Four Winds are available for adolescents and adults struggling with mental health and substance abuse disorders. Clients begin with an initial evaluation to help develop an individualized treatment plan. Each client’s plan consists of group, individual and family therapy sessions. Medication management services are not available on-site, though referrals can be made upon request.
The outpatient program for adults lasts anywhere from six to 14 weeks. Adults attend one group therapy session a week for about an hour at a time whereas individual and family therapy sessions are scheduled as-needed. Group therapy is always lead by certified counselors who discuss topics such as anger management, the disease of addiction, co-dependency, assertiveness, co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention, spirituality and vocational or educational goals. Adults are also introduced to the 12 steps and are encouraged to attend two to three outside AA/NA meetings a week. In addition to attending meetings, it is recommended that adults find a home group and a sponsor to help them work through the steps.
Adolescents are provided a six week program that meets for group therapy sessions twice a week. Throughout the six weeks, participants must also attend two individual therapy sessions and at least one family therapy session. Groups cover topics such as psycho-education, character building, decision making, relapse prevention, life skills, stress management and peer pressure.
Staff members include licensed clinical addiction counselors, Licensed MFTs and a Certified Kansas Compulsive Gambling counselor. Treatment modalities include CBT, DBT, 12-step and psycho-education.
Extras
A six-month aftercare program focused on relapse prevention is also available for all who complete treatment. The program offers one group therapy session a week for a small fee. Counselors aim to teach problem-solving skills for a smooth transition into life after treatment.
Additional services include therapy for compulsive gambling available through individual therapy sessions scheduled as-needed. There are also parenting workshops for teen and adult parents held in a group setting on a weekly basis. These workshops focus on how to become a loving parent while providing clients with the necessary tools to establish healthy relationships.
An all-day educational course about alcohol and drug addiction is held every second Saturday of the month for eight hours at a time. While the course is intended for court-ordered clients, it remains open to anyone interested in attending.
Intervention training for mental health professionals is also available, as are intervention services for addiction, compulsive spending, gambling and internet dependency. Drug tests are performed upon request and for an additional fee.
