The Basics
The Julian F. Keith Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center is a certified and accredited psychiatric hospital that is operated by the state government of North Carolina. The JFK Treatment Center provides treatment to adult North Carolina residents with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Programs include acute short-term, crisis stabilization and medically monitored detox offered on inpatient basis. Both voluntary and court-ordered clients will be considered for admission. The JFK Treatment Center is located about 15 miles east of Asheville in Black Mountain and there are numerous affiliated, state-run centers throughout North Carolina.
Accommodations and Food
Nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, the The JFK Treatment Center is a 68-bed facilities, 30 of which are part of a dedicated acute care, detox and stabilization unit. Clients reside in semi-private, gender-separated dormitories, sleeping in twin or bunk beds. Though bedrooms and common areas are without frills, The JFK Treatment Center manages to create an atmosphere more warm than clinical. Hospital staff prepares nutritious, simple meals, serving them in the cafeteria. There is strictly no smoking on the property, and use of phones and TV time are limited.
Treatment and Staff
To be admitted, clients must be referred through a local management entity. The process from assessment to admission can be a few days to three weeks, depending on bed availability. Referring agencies can be easily found online. Once admitted, clients receive individualized treatment plans that utilize evidence-based and holistic practices. Treatment length varies from 14 to 28 days, which can include a period of medically monitored detox or crisis stabilization. Clients are supervised around the clock and receive ongoing psychiatric evaluations. Though clients with co-occurring disorders receive targeted treatment and medication management, those requiring a higher level of care are referred to affiliated, state-run facilities.
Therapeutic modalities are tailored to treat substance abuse or co-occurring disorders separately. Group therapy focuses on gender-specific issues and includes learning coping and communication skills, as well as education about substance abuse and living with mental health disorders. Individual therapy may be included in some treatment plans, while all can expect regular counseling with a case manager. Though a 12-step approach to recovery is not required, meetings are held on-site and are recommended. By combining Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and recreation services, staff guides clients through group and trust activities that build self-esteem, assertiveness, life skills and lay a foundation for recovery.
The treatment team consists of consulting psychiatrists, physicians and registered nurses, while healthcare technicians and therapists offer additional services.
Extras
Connecting clients to community resources, the clinical team ensures continued care plans are in place and include necessary referrals and aftercare plans at the time of discharge.
In Summary
Operating as part of a statewide network, the Julian F. Keith Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center is able to provide especially strong support for clients with co-occurring disorders. The large medical staff and access to community resources means clients in crisis can be safely treated. Once stabilized, clients seeking long-term recovery may benefit from referrals to more intensive extended care programs. Though services are only available for residents of North Carolina, none are turned away for inability to pay.
