chattanooga tennesseeThe Basics

Focus Treatment Centers provides comprehensive services to those struggling with addiction in Tennessee. The facility’s Chattanooga location offers a residential program, detox and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, while the Knoxville location is dedicated solely to the treatment of eating disorders. Treatment blends the traditional with the holistic, taking an individualized approach to recovery. Using 12-step principles, clients are guided towards long-term sobriety.

Accommodations and Food

Set in the sprawling hills of Chattanooga, the facility accommodates up to 28 residents at a time. Bedrooms are shared between two clients and furnished with twin-sized beds and shared dressers. The clients also have access to a common area with a television, therapy rooms and a dining hall. When it comes to staying in shape, clients have a chance to visit the local YMCA three times a week with temporary memberships provided. Clients are also taken off-site for weekly activities such as trips to the movies or afternoons at the park. Smoking is permitted outside of the building.

Residents are provided three meals a day, with all food prepared and served on-site. Dietary requests can usually be accommodated and caffeine is permitted in the mornings.

Treatment and Staff

A four- to 10-day medical detox is available and often includes medication to ease withdrawal symptoms. Once stable, clients can enroll in the residential program which typically lasts for 28 days. The treatment schedule entails one hour-long individual session per week in conjunction with many hours of group therapy. Group topics include relapse prevention, nutritional education, life skills, self awareness and stress reduction. Evidence-based therapies like CBT and DBT are used to change negative thinking patterns. Holistic methods are woven into the schedule as well, including yoga and movement and art therapy.

The 12 steps are viewed as a crucial component to recovery, with daily AA/NA meetings available both on- and off-site. For those struggling with mental health issues, there is a psychiatrist available for medication management.

A typical day in residential care starts with breakfast followed by meditation or yoga. Residents then attend group before free time and lunch. After lunch there is another group session, meeting or art therapy. Prior to dinner, clients can visit the YMCA or relax. Finally, residents attend an AA/NA meeting after dinner followed by free time before bed.

Family involvement is also highly encouraged. An educational family weekend is offered, where communication, boundaries and codependency are discussed. In addition, family therapy is available in-person or through Skype. Visiting hours are scheduled on Sundays from 1 to 4:45 pm. Phone time is available during the evenings.

IOP meets three times a week for three hours at a time. The program focuses exclusively on group therapy. Each week the treatment team meets to check in on each client’s progress or setbacks. Group topics include relapse prevention, processing, life skills and coping mechanisms. Clients are required to attend at least three 12-step meetings per week. In addition, they are required to see an outside therapist for individual therapy twice a month.

The staff consists of Ph.D and Master’s-level therapists, nurses and psychiatrists. IOP group sizes range from six to 12 clients at a time.

Extras

Before being released from residential care, clients and their therapists develop appropriate aftercare plans as well. Though these plans can vary, it is recommended that alumni attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Residential and outpatient services are offered for eating disorders.
