layton utahThe Basics

Based in Layton, Utah, Davis Behavioral Health is a private non-profit organization providing behavioral health services for Davis County, including the greater Salt Lake City area. Davis Behavioral Health is a wing of the Davis Hospital and Medical Center, a 225-bed facility serving the Layton community since 1976. The facility has two distinct locations in Layton, one directly next door to the hospital providing services for the Davis County including an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse.

Treatment and Staff

While DBH does offer inpatient services, these are solely part of its mental health program and are limited to a short-term acute stabilization unit. The facility’s substance abuse services are outpatient, though clients in need of medical detox can do so through Davis Hospital. During this process, participants stay at the facility and receive 24/7 nursing care which typically lasts three to five days. These services are supplemental to the outpatient program, and come at an additional cost. Similarly, those attending the substance abuse program do not have regular visits with a psychiatrist or medical doctor though they can independently schedule these appointments through Davis Hospital as needed.

Clients attend treatment in DBH’s main facility next to the hospital. Because clientele are both court-ordered and self-referred, there is an initial assessment to determine each individual’s needs. DBH works in conjunction with Davis Drug Court, Davis Drug Board, Drug Offender Reform Act, Plea and Abeyance Program and Drug Probation Program to design treatment that meets the specific requirements of each organization.

The IOP at DBH includes four group therapy sessions and one individual therapy session each week led by LADCs. Therapy consists primarily of CBT and group sessions are never larger than 11 clients at a time. Clients are encouraged to participate in a 12-step program, with an on-site NA meeting held once a week. After 10 weeks in the IOP, clients typically step down to a standard outpatient program with a group session once or twice a week and individual sessions as needed. The average length of outpatient treatment is six months, though this varies according to court mandates and individual progress. While there is no official aftercare program, clients can extend their treatment as needed after their initial six months.

While some of the counselors are certified to provide dual diagnosis care and clients with Medicaid can receive medication management, those in need of a more comprehensive help for co-occurring disorders should attend one of DBH’s specific dual diagnosis programs. These are gender-specific outpatient programs available for both men and women held at the facility’s second location across town.

Extras

DBH also has a number of individual programs and services clients can use to complement outpatient care. These include ongoing case management after treatment ends and family services. There’s also Journey House, a community center where clients with persistent mental illness can receive assistance in developing life skills and help finding employment. DBH also has a 24-hour crisis line.

In Summary

As with many substance abuse programs that fall under a large banner of behavioral health services, the Davis Behavioral Health recovery services benefit clients by providing access to the resources of the larger organization. Clients can expect a standard IOP with group and individual sessions using CBT and the 12-steps as well as additional programs for dual diagnosis issues. In all, Davis Behavioral Health is an affordable and flexible option for the Layton community.
