The Basics
Founded in 2001 in Bismarck, North Dakota, Chambers and Blohm Psychological Services provides outpatient treatment for substance abuse issues and support for those with co-occurring disorders. While focus is placed on treating each client through individual therapy sessions, there are supplementary groups available when needed.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at CBPS is flexible and available to adults and adolescents. Before beginning treatment, each participant is evaluated to determine whether CBPS would be a good fit. If so, each client gets assigned a therapist who helps them develop an individualized treatment plan. Adults in need of dual diagnosis support have access to psychiatric medication management services on-site.
Frequency of individual therapy and length of treatment varies from client to client. Sessions are typically 30 minutes to an hour long and can be scheduled as often as needed. These meetings are facilitated by LADCs and rely on a harm reduction model rather than demanding complete abstinence. Along with individual therapy, clients can also choose to attend a DBT-based group therapy session every Tuesday from 4 to 5:30 pm. The DBT group is part of a year-long program broken into four 10-week segments. During the year, a therapist addresses mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation and distress tolerance. While this group does not specifically discuss substance abuse, it is commonly attended by those with a dual-diagnosis.
Participation in a 12-step program is not mandatory, though AA/NA meetings are strongly encouraged. Staff members can refer clients to local community meetings upon request.
Therapists are available for individual sessions during regular business hours, though accommodations can be made in the case of emergencies. All therapists are trained in evidence-based modalities like CBT and DBT. The staff consists of nurses, LADCs, psychologists and LCSWs.
Extras
Aside from the above, Chambers and Blohm also offers a self-esteem group for women’s issues held at random by an LCSW with years of experience. There are also therapists at CBPS who specialize in eating disorders, human sexuality, PTSD, ADHD and multicultural issues. Couples counseling is also available.
