The Basics
The Catholic Social Services of the Diocese of Scranton was originally founded in 1877 as St. Patrick’s Orphanage. Over several decades, CSSDS expanded into a network of orphanages until 1968 when the organization began to diversify its services and became the more generalized Catholic Social Services.
Drug and alcohol treatment services were officially offered in 1986 when the Tunkhannock office opened. With eight different locations in Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, Hazleton, Carbondale, Honesdale, Milford, Mansfield and Stroudsburg, this non-profit community service has a state-wide reach. Each location offers outpatient drug and alcohol treatment as well as DUI services and prevention programs. Treatment incorporates evidence based methods and the 12 steps.
Treatment and Staff
The drug and alcohol program through CSSDS provides treatment for both the surrounding communities as well as the Luzerne County Correctional Facility. Treatment includes an initial assessment and screening to determine the most suitable course of treatment. The outpatient program is designed for mild to moderate chemical dependency. There is no detox available and if clients require more intensive treatment, counselors refer them to a trusted community resource. Dual diagnosis support is available through both individual and group therapy sessions.
Outpatient treatment is facilitated once per week. Scheduling is flexible and clients may attend groups and individual therapy in the morning or evening hours to accommodate work and family obligations. For two hours, clients attend groups that focus on psycho-education, relapse prevention and life skills so they may be more productive in their recovery. All groups are conducted by LADCs with extensive training in treating clients with co-occurring disorders. In addition to group therapy, clients are strongly encouraged to attend 12-step meetings to develop a strong recovery network outside of treatment. All treatment utilizes CBT methods.
Extras
There is no family program available through CSSDS but clients are encouraged to have their loved ones participate in family therapy. Counselors work with the family unit to produce harmonious communication making the home environment supportive of recovery.
CSSDS also offers a DUI program and a multiple-offender DUI program that can be attended in conjunction with the outpatient track. This program consists of four outpatient group sessions lasting two to three hours in length. Clients work to fulfill the state requirements for license reinstatement. With a total of 10 clients in each group, counselors focus on psycho-education, co-dependency, family, legal consequences as well as financial repercussions of repeated DUI offenses.
In Summary
The Catholic Social Services of the Diocese of Scranton is a network of facilities that provide effective drug and alcohol treatment for mild to moderately substance-dependent individuals. Treatment is scheduled once per week and focuses on providing knowledge, healing and growth. Counselors refer clients to community resources as-needed and provide a safe space for clients to begin their recovery without compromising their schedules and pocketbooks.
