The Basics
New Directions is the Brooklyn Center for Psychotherapy’s outpatient substance abuse treatment program which can be found in the historic Park Slope area of Brooklyn, New York. New Directions offers services in English and Spanish and the program may last from six up to 24 months. The Brooklyn Center for Psychotherapy has now been in operation for more than 50 years, New Directions starting its own journey in 1988.
Treatment and Staff
New Directions offers an outpatient program, which is made up of hour long group therapy sessions which clients may attend one to five times per week, depending on individual need. Clients must also attend an individual session with an assigned counselor once a week for 45 minutes. The New Directions center is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 am to 9 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am to 5 pm. Group sessions run throughout the day, covering topics that include coping skills, effective communication, relapse prevention, mindfulness meditation and art therapy.
Services provided for clients of New Directions include diagnostic and psychiatric evaluations, family and couples’ counseling, dual-diagnosis support via specialized groups and medication management, separate weekly men’s, women’s and relationship workshops.
New Directions employs certified alcohol and substance abuse counselors and creative arts therapists who use a multi-disciplinary approach, as well as a psychiatrist and social workers. An on-site doctor is on hand to prescribe any necessary medication.
Extras
New Directions also offers a DWI Program, HIV Testing, pre-testing and post-testing counseling and even acupuncture.
New Directions is soon to start a 12-week group which is to focus on health goals while recovering, covering such topics as stress management, nutrition and exercise.
In Summary
New Directions is a great choice for those considering outpatient treatment in Brooklyn. The bonus is that most services, apart from the initial assessment, and therapy sessions, are offered free of charge. For the rest, New Directions accepts most insurance and counselors may even tailor therapy to accommodate a client’s financial needs.
