salisbury marylandThe Basics

Located in Salisbury, Maryland, Wicomico Behavioral Health provides mental health and substance abuse support to adolescents and adults in need of treatment during early recovery. Treatment options for adults include standard outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), with basic outpatient care for adolescents. There’s also a methadone maintenance program and medication management services to support those with a dual diagnosis.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at WBH begins with an assessment. Walk-ins are available Monday through Thursday starting at 8 am. Those in need of detox from opiates are placed in a methadone maintenance program before being referred to a more intensive residential treatment program in the area. All others are matched with a therapist who best suits their needs. Clients then work together to develop an individualized treatment plan. For those in need of support for co-occurring disorders, there’s an on-site psychiatrist who provides medication management.

Adult treatment programs at WBH include standard outpatient and IOP. The standard outpatient program requires fewer than nine hours of group and individual therapy each week. Groups are scheduled throughout the day for one to two hours at a time for a minimum of 26 weeks.

The IOP meets for three hour-long group sessions three days a week, with a morning and evening group available to accommodate varying schedules. Morning groups meet on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to noon while evening groups meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 8 pm. Group topics include anxiety, depression, the disease of addiction, relapse prevention and coping skills. Individual therapy sessions are scheduled as needed. Aside from attending therapy, clients are encouraged to participate in the 12-step program. Referrals to support group meetings like AA/NA can be provided upon request.

The adolescent program caters to individuals between the ages of 12 and 17 struggling with mental health and substance abuse disorders. Treatment consists of one group therapy session a week held on Thursdays from 4 to 5 pm. Adolescents dealing with substance abuse related charges are offered a different group on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Treatment typically lasts for 26 weeks. During groups, an LADC offers education on substance abuse while discussing topics like driving with care, relapse prevention, communicating with parents, life skills and stress management. Individual therapy sessions are available as a supplement to groups. Family members are also encouraged to take part in the young person’s recovery and are invited to participate in therapy. These sessions are scheduled with primary therapists on an as-needed basis.

Staff members at WBH include LADCs, CADCs and psychiatrists. Treatment modalities include CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

Extras

Other Wicomico Behavioral Health services include a minority youth outreach program that consists of parent education groups, community and school groups, anger management and community networking services. This program is available to residents living in Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester County. Mental health services are also available in an individual, family, and group therapy setting. Clients are offered a psychiatric evaluation along with medication management. Therapy addresses issues such as trauma, ADD, PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

Additionally, there’s a psychiatric rehabilitation program that deals solely with mental illness. The program provides educational, social and support groups to children and adolescents referred from a mental health clinician.

Individuals who are currently incarcerated at the Wicocima County Detention Center can attend the Male and Female Forensic Program as long as they meet the criteria for the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). The program provides less than nine hours of treatment each week which includes gender-specific group therapy. As a supplement to groups, clients also attend one individual therapy session a month and one on-site NA/AA meeting a week.
