Boston Massachusetts
The Basics

Lahey Behavioral Health Services has a substance abuse and mental health treatment history spanning over 50 years. Formerly known as Northeast Behavioral Health, Lahey provides services for residents of the greater Boston, North Shore and Merrimack Valley, in Massachusetts. Offering a continuum of care that spans detox, inpatient, outpatient, prevention and education, adult and adolescent clients find targeted treatment. There are three accredited inpatient detox centers located in Boston, Danvers and Tewksbury, which serve local residents.

Accommodations and Food

With 85 beds available in three locations, each of the detox centers provide double and single-occupancy rooms that are separated by gender. Bathrooms are shared, and while furnishings are comfortable, style is not the focus. As clients are transitioning through a challenging medical process, emphasis is placed on safety and high-level care, rather than luxurious amenities. Meals are provided, with attention on basic nutrition. Smoking at the Tewksbury Center is not allowed.

Treatment and Staff

While clients are generally 18 or older, younger clients may sometimes be admitted to the Danvers location with special permission. Referrals can be made from hospitals, shelters, police, courts or the client. Treatment length varies and is determined by the needs of the client. Some stay as few as four days, while other 14 or longer. All providing short-term care, clients are transferred or referred to long-term programs once physically stable.

Licensed nurses and doctors supervise all clients around the clock, administering medications as needed. While each of the centers provides safe, medically monitored detox, the Danvers and Tewksbury locations offer additional medical services. Risk assessment and testing for tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted illnesses are performed, with comprehensive biological and social evaluations. At the Boston location, those with additional medical needs are provided referrals to affiliated healthcare centers. Clients with co-occurring disorders are supported through medication management, providing substance abuse is their primary condition. For those with emergent psychiatric needs, referrals are given for Lahey Behavioral mental health services.

Clients receive individual case management with a range of therapeutic modalities to utilize as soon as they are physically able. Group therapy is offered daily, with individual and family counseling at least once during their stay. Clients are also introduced to 12-step programs, and encouraged to continue attendance after completing detox. Additionally, clients benefit from the support a community of recovering addicts provides.

Extras

Aftercare planning is offered at all locations and consists of referral to ongoing care and scheduled follow-up calls and visits. Clients may be referred to one of the inpatient or transitional living services offered by Lahey, or to a 12-step fellowship in their neighborhood. Often, both are suggested.

In Summary

Lahey Behavioral Health Services provides three centers for medically monitored detox, each serving different areas of Massachusetts. With a highly trained medical staff, clients receive specialized treatment in a safe environment. Offering therapeutic modalities like group therapy and 12-step meetings means that clients are given a good foundation from which to begin recovery. Aftercare planning allows clients to safely transition to other services. As with other Lahey services, fees are offset by grants and paid through insurance or on a sliding scale according to household income.
