Bridgeville PennsylvaniaThe Basics

Gateway Rehab is a network of detoxoutpatient and residential substance abuse treatment facilities in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Gateway Rehab was founded in 1972 by Dr. Abraham Twersky, a medical doctor who has authored 60 books and become a well-known lecturer on addiction.

Located in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania—a picturesque village just eight miles southwest of Pittsburgh—the Liberty Station facility is a residential halfway house that provides transitional care for young men between the ages of 13 and 22.

Accommodations and Food

Liberty Station occupies two suburban residences. Treating up to 24 young men at a time, residents are accommodated according to age with those under 18 in one facility and those over 18 in a neighboring home. The young men each have a roommate and a shared bathroom among two or three rooms. There are TV lounges in each residence, each divided by age group.

Each resident is in charge of his own breakfast and lunch and a life skills coach helps with meal planning and shopping. Residents rotate house chores including dinner preparation which is assigned to a rotating team responsible for cooking for the entire house.

Treatment and Staff

Young men typically stay at Liberty Station for three to six months. Since many residents have already completed residential treatment, their time a Liberty Station is focused on readiness to reintegrate into their schools and communities.

Those under 18 attend a nearby public school or study for their GED. Those who have completed high school or who have earned their GED work with their counselors to apply for admission to local colleges or vocational training programs.

Upon entering Liberty House, each young man is given a treatment plan that includes individual and group therapy, life skills classes and 12-step meetings. Residents attend treatment around their school or work schedules, typically participating in fewer treatment activities as their engagement in school and work grows during the course of their stay.

Group therapy is CBT-based. In addition to attending daily on-site 12-step meetings, residents take a class on how to best use 12-step principles and how to work with a sponsor.

The treatment team at Liberty Station includes Master’s-level therapists. While staff is equipped to counsel those with co-occurring disorders, residents who need medication management and more intensive treatment also work with an outside mental health clinician.

Phones and personal computers are not permitted while living at Liberty Station. Residents can use the house phone to call family and there is an on-site computer lab for school assignments and job search purposes. Each house has a technical assistant on-site 24/7 to assist the residents.

Extras

Liberty Station residents receive a membership and transportation to the local YMCA for exercise. Clients are expected to participate in community service activities as part of their treatment. Upon approval, family can visit on weekends.

Liberty Station has a relationship with Bidwell Training Center which offers medical, horticultural and culinary vocational training programs. Additionally, Gateway Rehab has developed a motivational app—called 12:01—to assist clients who have completed their programs. It also features a motivational recovery-oriented Thought of the Day on its website.

In Summary

Liberty Station offers treatment-heavy transitional care for adolescent men near Pittsburgh. Using evidence-based therapies and a strong 12-step framework, the facility reinforces the treatment young men received before their arrival. By maintaining close relationships with nearby schools and vocational training programs, Liberty Station is well-equipped to provide its residents with opportunities to achieve their academic and professional goals while maintaining sobriety and a recovery community.
