The Basics
Oxford House of Connecticut is a series of nine Connecticut sober living houses in East Hartford, West Hartford, Hartford and New Haven—seven men’s facilities and two for women. Oxford House of Connecticut has provided sober housing since 1975 and is part of a network of 1,610 Oxford locations worldwide. For consideration, potential residents need to fill out an application, then they are interviewed by house members. There must be 80% approval in order for an individual to be accepted.
Accommodations and Amenities
All of the Oxford of Connecticut houses are located in quiet, safe, suburban neighborhoods and have accommodations for between eight to 15 residents. The houses are single-family, with two full bathrooms and four or more bedrooms. Most bedrooms are large enough for two twin beds. Each resident gets a closet space, drawer space and under-bed area for storage. Houses supply all paper products. Residents should bring their own toiletries and towels. Each house has laundry facilities on-site.
Houses have common areas, generally the living room. In some of the houses there is an extra room, usually a dining room or den, that can serve as another community room. There are either one or two TVs with cable, and a computer with Wi-Fi that is available to all residents. Kitchens are fully-stocked with modern appliances and all dishes, silverware and utensils. The clients are responsible for shopping for their own food and planning meals. Grocery and meal-sharing is encouraged.
Rules and Regulations
Oxford Houses are self-governed. Residents elect officers who serve six month terms and it is not uncommon for residents to stay several years. Residents must get a 12-step sponsor in the first month of residency, attend five meetings a week and work the program. Curfews are 10 pm Sundays through Wednesdays and midnight on Saturdays and Sundays.
Visitors must be approved by 80% residents. Typically, male visitors must have special permission to hang out at females residences and the same goes for females at male houses. Random drug testing may occur when clients return from off-property visits. Residents who do not remain clean and sober are subject to immediate eviction.
Mandatory house meetings occur weekly and each house has a set day and time. Meeting participation is encouraged, as they are a good time to air grievances and to work towards resolution of any conflicts. All decisions are made by a majority vote. Oxford of Connecticut has a zero-tolerance policy concerning violence and physical and verbal threats. Theft of any kind is also not tolerated. Cleanliness of each resident’s space is a matter of personal responsibility. Common areas are to be kept tidy and free of personal belongings. Chores to maintain the houses are assigned each week and must be completed on time.

In Summary
As a network of more than a thousand facilities, Oxford House is a tried and true name in sober living. Those who need a high level of independence or are opposed to the 12 steps will not find the Oxford House concept to be a good fit. On the other hand, men and women seeking a structured, peer support environment can find a safe home at Oxford House Connecticut.
