The Basics
A division of Wake County Human Services and operated by University of North Carolina Hospital, WakeBrook Recovery Center provides substance abuse treatment for adult residents of Wake County, North Carolina. WakeBrook provides short-term detox, with access to a network of other ongoing programs.
Accommodation and Food
Though WakeBrook is technically a short-term acute-care facility, efforts have been made to create a tranquil, warm environment that reduces the client’s stress. As individuals go through withdrawal, physical comfort is paramount. Up to 16 co-ed residents are accommodated in private rooms that branch off from the central nurses station. This provides staff easy access to clients, while maintaining their privacy. Common areas are comfortably furnished, offering entertainment by way of TV and books, while natural light and greenery minimize the clinical atmosphere. Meals are provided through the hospital, so offer little opportunity for variance outside allergies and dietary restrictions.
Treatment and Staff
At WakeBrook Recovery Center, Clients who are HIV positive, IV drug users and/or pregnant are considered high-priority and are accepted with a shorter wait time and at a greater frequency than others. With crisis and assessment services available, clients experiencing an emergency related to mental health, a developmental disability, substance abuse or co-occurring disorder receive immediate medical and psychiatric care.
Each client is provided an individualized treatment plan, as different substances require differing protocols. They remain in treatment until physically recovered, which averages five days but can be as long as two weeks. During this time nurses administer medication—excluding methadone and similar drugs—to alleviate the discomfort of withdrawal. Under doctor supervision, ongoing medication management is provided for clients requiring dual diagnosis support.
A case manager supervises treatment goals and commences additional modalities as soon as the client is stable. These include group therapy that occurs daily and aims to introduce clients to new behaviors. Techniques to avoid triggers and foster healthy communication are discussed, though more emphasis is placed on finding a long-term support system. The case manager will meet with the client individually twice to talk about options. Recommendations to outside providers near the client’s location are made based on individual circumstances. Residential treatment, transitional care and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are commonly suggested.
