Jacksonville FloridaThe Basics

Gateway Community Services has been treating the residents of Jacksonville, Florida for over 35 years. Over time, it has grown into a multi-track full-service facility with detox, residential and outpatient services for adults and adolescents. It also offers a variety of aftercare and transitional services such as halfway houses and online substance abuse counseling.

Treatment and Staff

Upon seeking treatment at GCS, potential clients are required to attend four Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) groups to gauge their willingness to change. Clients are enrolled in one of three tracks; standard outpatient, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and the third level of care, which GCS calls “Day-Night”.

Clients enrolled in the standard outpatient track attend treatment from 6 to 8 pm once or twice a week. The IOP meets three evenings per week from 6 to 9 pm. Duration for both of these tracks is progress-based. The “Day-Night” track meets three hours each day, four days a week, for six to 12 weeks. In each program, clients attend group therapy that addresses topics such as triggers, relapse prevention and anger management. Individual therapy is scheduled as-needed.

GCS offers an additional outpatient program—Room and Board—for pregnant women and women with children. This program provides the standard outpatient services along with education classes on parenting and nutrition, job search assistance and case-management services.

The treatment team at GCS is equipped to treat co-occurring disorders. The team includes Master’s-level therapists including Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs), addiction counselors and psychiatrists.

Extras

All clients have access to Kids Success Center—GCS’s on-site childcare center—while they attend treatment. Kids Success cares for children up to 11 years old and provides them with cognitive-enrichment and recreational activities while their parents are in treatment.

GCS also offers an outpatient Intervention Services program. In this track, clients who may have a substance abuse problem but who are not ready to commit to treatment attend a two-hour education class one day a week for six weeks.

Finally, GCS maintains a robust alumni association for additional support and has launched an online counseling service. It also provides counseling services in Spanish. GCS is in the midst of a seven-million dollar capital campaign to renovate its Stockton Street facilities.
