The Basics
Established in 1988, Cherry Street Health Services is a non-profit health center bringing comprehensive treatment to those who have little or no access to health care. Services include primary care, women’s health, pediatrics, dental, vision, behavioral health, mental health, five school-based health facilities and employee assistance. For those struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, two outpatient locations in Grand Rapids, Michigan are available. Treatment is done through Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), individual sessions and aftercare. Using evidence-based therapies, clients are guided toward sobriety.
Treatment and Staff
Cherry Street Health Services offers outpatient treatment at two locations: Heart of the City Health Center and Leonard Street Counseling Center. Clients must be seeing an individual counselor in order to be referred into IOP. Support for co-occurring issues is offered through therapy and psychiatry. Neither detox nor residential care are available, but referrals are available.
The five-week IOP meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 1 pm. The program includes individual and group therapy. Individual sessions are an hour long each and occur once a week. Topics covered during group include relapse prevention, life skills, coping mechanisms and processing. Through the use of CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), clients can challenge their negative thoughts.
Following the completion of IOP, clients can step down into aftercare. This 10-week program meets once a week for group therapy. Topics include relapse prevention to make sure clients stay on track.
Individual therapy is also available as stand-alone treatment. These sessions are usually an hour long, creating space for privacy and one-on-one attention. With the help of staff counselors, clients can address the underlying causes behind their issues. Topics including psychiatric disorders, stress, trauma, family and relationship issues whenever applicable. Frequency of treatment varies by individual.
Those struggling with mental health issues can see a mental health professional. The treatment team consists of Master’s-level social workers and psychiatrists. Group sizes are capped at 12 people.
