The Basics
Located in Asheville, North Carolina, RHA Behavioral Services, a large behavioral health organization. It is recognized by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services as a statewide Critical Access Behavioral Health Facility (CABHA) which has services in 23 counties in the state and estimates to serve over 12,000 clients a year. Nearby is the Neil Dobbins Center, a short-term residential facility which offers detox and stabilization services. After detox is completed, RHA offers a range of outpatient options for recovery from substance abuse.
Accommodations and Food
The Neil Dobbins Center is a 16-bed facility which offers only short-term detox stays. This process typically takes between three and seven days and clients do not stay at the facility any longer than seven days. While not technically a hospital facility, the living situation is closer to that of a hospital stay than a residential home. Most of the clients share a room with one other roommate, though there are two single rooms available and each comes with twin beds, basic furnishings and a sink. The bathrooms are communal and located in the hallways. Clients receive three meals a day, prepared for them by an on-staff cook and served cafeteria style in the facility dining room.
Treatment and Staff
As mentioned, The Neil Dobbins Center specializes in providing care for co-occurring disorders. Clients receive 24-hour nursing care and supervision during detox and should expect regular visits with the facility’s medical director, registered nurses and a staff psychiatrist. Medication management is also offered. The facility also has licensed therapists; peers support specialists and case managers who handle the day-to-day treatment services. These services take the form of group therapy sessions held four times a day and individual therapy sessions held once a day. These sessions are CBT in nature with a strong emphasis place on peer-to-peer sharing. Clients are also introduced to 12-step concepts. Each day, clients have daily meetings with their case manager to develop an aftercare plan for their next stage of recovery.
The next step in treatment is typically an outpatient program at the RHA Behavioral Services Asheville facility located directly across the street from the Neil Dobbins Center. The facility offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which features three-hour group counseling sessions three times a week and individual counseling sessions as needed. Typically after several months, clients begin a program of aftercare comprised of one to two group sessions a week and occasional individual sessions. Dual-diagnosis services are available as well and the entire program is supervised by a staff psychiatrist, though for day-to-day concerns such as medication management, clients typically work with a staff physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner.
Extras
RHA Behavioral Services Asheville location also offers a family program, wherein family members can attend group sessions.
In Asheville alone, RHA Behavioral Services offers a host of other programs for potential clients seeking substance abuse or dual diagnosis treatment. There is the Mary Benson House which offers outpatient care tailored to pre-natal women or mothers with young children and features weekly therapy sessions, case management, parenting classes and even transportation.
RHA Behavioral Services also has another facility specifically designed for children and families in need of healthcare and behavioral services and also sponsors prison-based recovery services for those currently incarcerated in the Buncombe County jail.
In Summary
In all, RHA Behavioral Services offers a range of medically oriented treatment services. Clients can expect dual diagnosis oriented care as well as regular visits with a staff physician and psychiatrist. Clients attend group and individual therapy and work with a case manager to develop a program of continued outpatient recovery.
