Primarily based in Lakewood, Colorado, Jefferson Center for Mental Health is a major statewide provider of behavioral health services. In addition to eight facilities in Lakewood, the facility also has four branches in Wheat Ridge and individual centers in Arvada, Blackhawk, Littleton, Idaho Springs and Evergreen. Though primarily a provider of mental health services, Jefferson Center for Mental Health does offer an outpatient program for substance abuse at its office in Lakewood.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning the outpatient program, clients participate in an initial intake evaluation. If it is determined that a medical detox is necessary, clients are referred to an accommodating facility nearby—typically the Denver House. Since the facility’s substance abuse program only accepts Medicaid, those who do not yet receive these benefits must meet with a case manager to begin the submission process. Those who are enrolled in the Jefferson Center substance abuse program are typically a mix of court-appointed and self-referred clients and all should expect urinalysis screens over the duration of their stay.

After intake, clients begin a treatment program which generally consists of three group therapy sessions a week scheduled in the evenings from 3 to 6 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Groups are kept small, generally with two to six clients at a time and are led by a CADC. Participants also have access to individual therapy sessions as often as needed, with most attending at least once a week.

Though not an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), the Jefferson Center for Mental Health program uses the Matrix Model and encourages clients to familiarize themselves with 12-step recovery, though attending meetings is not a mandatory component of the program. Clients can also expect a family program, which consists of one group session a month with family members and significant others.

Given that Jefferson Center is primarily a mental health facility, clients can expect a full dual diagnosis program as part of overall treatment. Two group sessions per week are dedicated to co-occurring disorders. The third focuses on mental health issues, using DBT to address issues such as anxiety, depression and trauma. Perhaps one of the most notable bonuses to Jefferson Center’s program is that those in need of dual diagnosis care have access to the full resources of the facility which includes visits with a psychiatrist and medication management.

Extras

Typically, the outpatient program at Jefferson Center lasts eight to nine weeks. After completion of this phase, clients begin an aftercare program consisting of one group therapy session a week. Individual therapy is also available during this time as well.

While Jefferson Center’s substance abuse program is based out of their Lakewood office, clients can attend individual therapy sessions at any of its 16 other locations.

In Summary

Jefferson Center for Mental Health’s range of resources and breadth of services allow clients to participate in a traditional outpatient program with comprehensive dual-diagnosis support. Though relatively short-term, the program still provides evidence-based treatment methods that guide clients through recovery.
