Buena Park CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in 1999 in Buena Park, California, Christian Sober Living provides two gender-specific sober living houses for men and women in Orange County. As the name suggests, this is Christian-based organization that believes alcoholism and drug addiction are spiritual maladies, and that clients can find liberation through Christ and by working the 12 steps. Besides utilizing their Big Books, clients are encouraged to study scripture. While clients are not forced to follow a faith-based protocol, they are provided with a Christian oriented atmosphere.

Accommodations and Amenities

The male-only home is 4,000 square feet and accommodates 14 clients and a female-only house which lodges between seven and 12 women. Clients are typically paired in furnished rooms, which include twin beds and ample storage space. Amenities include Wi-Fi, Cable TV, laundry facilities, DVD players and landline phones with local and long distance calling.

The houses include fully equipped kitchens and spacious living and dining rooms. Clients are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. House managers live on the premises.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, clients must have undergone detox, and have at least 72 hours of sobriety. A 90-day minimum length of stay is required. Clients must be self-supporting and have a steady income, including a job or disability benefits. While Christian Sober Living allows certain prescribed medications, they will not accept clients on benzodiazepines and narcotics.

During the first 30 days, clients must attend daily 12-step meetings and acquire a sponsor. After that time, clients must attend between three and five 12-step meetings, which can include outside AA/NA meetings, in-house 12-step speaker gatherings and Bible-based 12-step discussion groups. Attendance at a church service is also counted as a weekly meeting.

The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. At Christian Sober Living, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. The house maintains a zero tolerance policy, and those who have relapsed are immediately evicted from the premises. Additionally, if appropriate, staff contacts local enforcement authorities, as well as parole and probation departments.

Extras

The houses are in close proximity to 12-step meetings, beaches, shopping, and public transportation. Many clients attend AA meetings at the nearby Alano club.

Besides housing, other services include vocational guidance, linkage to welfare services and mental health referrals. A local church that clients attend is The Rock Church in Anaheim, California. At Christian Sober Living, clients are encouraged to participate in Operation Solid Lives, which is an online discipleship program.

In Summary

Clients interested in a faith-based approach, in conjunction with a 12-step recovery protocol will find themselves at home at Christian Sober Living. The houses are gorgeous, and the price is highly affordable. Staff does not like to disclose their address, for the safety and privacy of clients.
