Scottsdale Sober House offers two sober living homes (The Ranch House for men and Casita House for women) in Scottsdale, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. This 12-step based program aims to help clients lead stable lives through community support and structured living.

Accommodations and Amenities

Both houses are on a two-acre horse property and offer private and shared rooms, as well as a professional-style kitchen where residents prepare their own meals. There is a community living room area with a flat screen TV, a business center with high-speed Internet and two computers. A pool, BBQ and patio can be used during downtime. Though no transportation is provided, public transit is a short walk from the facility. A laundry room is available on-site.

Equine therapy and horseback riding lessons take place at the stables on-site and weekly outdoor AA meetings are hosted at the outdoor gazebos. A house manager is on-site 24/7. Though the facility’s website mentions an additional Starfire House, that location has closed.

Rules and Regulations

Residents must attend daily 12-step meetings, though these can include AA, NA or CA meetings. Meetings are held on-site once a week and each client must have a sponsor. Residents also get a host of daily chores to complete, and all must submit to random drug and alcohol screenings to ensure they are staying clean during their stay. Curfew is 9 pm for the first 30 days and 10 pm Sunday through Thursday and 12 am Friday and Saturday thereafter.

Each client must have a job within 30 days of enrollment, although staff prefers everyone be employed within the first 14 days. Smoking is allowed outside only, though no pets are allowed on the premises. Use of illegal drugs or alcohol, sexual activity of any kind, or failure to disclose another resident’s alcohol or drug use to the house manager will all result in immediate discharge. Staff do daily bed checks at 9 am, with more flexibility on weekends. Violations of house rules are reported to the house manager and six violations can be grounds for dismissal.

In Summary

Scottsdale Sober House may not have all the bells and whistles of more luxurious facilities, but is an affordable way for clients to ease into sober life. Through mandatory meetings, community support and assistance in finding employment, residents are armed with the basic life skills they need to succeed.
